Deadline: 1st June 2018

About Ashinaga:

Ashinaga is a Japanese non-profit organization that provides educational and emotional support to young people who have experienced the loss of one or both parents. Ashinaga enables students to overcome emotional trauma, advance their education, and become agents of social change. We have offices globally and have supported over 100 orphaned students from Sub-Saharan Africa to study at universities in Japan, Europe, the United States, and Brazil.

Need for a Mental Health Counselor:

Ashinaga works with vulnerable, orphaned adolescents between the ages of 18-23. An accredited mental health counselor is needed during Study Camp to address any issues students may be facing due to prior life traumas, current stressors regarding their participation in Ashinaga’s intensive academic and leadership program, and potential future problems that may emerge in the process of making a major life transition to study abroad.

Job Expectations:

As an Ashinaga Mental Health Counselor, it is expected to provide one-on-one counseling to any of our students. The first two weeks of the contract will be devoted to 30-minute introductory sessions with each of the students. After that, students will be able to privately request a 30-minute or 1-hour session with the Counselor during the Counselor’s allotted working hours. The Counselor should also be able to note, if necessary, any potential problems a student may have even if that student does not seek counseling and thus recommend appropriate actions.

Recruitment Process:

  1. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years experience working with vulnerable adolescents, preferably with orphans.
  2. He/she should be appropriately accredited.
  3. He/she should have experience living and/or working internationally.
  4. He/she should speak fluent English.
  5. Portuguese language skills are highly desired as well as any other medical certifications.

Selection Process:

The deadline to apply is June 1st, and interviews will commence June 16th, 17th, and 18th. A decision and notification will be sent out by June 20th.
